County approves routine grants and nominations, sets 2026 meeting schedule

At its Sept. 22 meeting, the Callahan County Commissioners Court approved several routine resolutions and administrative items: authorization of county grant applications for the Callahan County nutrition program (for TDA funding), authorization for the Cross Plains citizens center grant application, and a resolution to apply for the state indigent defense improvement grant to help reimburse out-of-pocket costs for court-appointed counsel.
The chair recommended re-nominating Karen Lehi as Callahan County's nominee to the Appraisal District Board of Directors; the court approved that nomination by voice vote. Commissioners also agreed to keep their 2026 meeting schedule on the second and fourth Mondays except when those dates fall on holidays, in which case meetings will move to Tuesdays.
On the indigent defense resolution, staff explained the grant provides reimbursement for county costs where public defender coverage is supplemented or unavailable; the county participates in the Concho Valley regional public defender arrangement and uses the resolution annually. Each resolution and nomination was moved, seconded and approved by voice vote during the meeting.
