Weston issues proclamations, honors deputies and community groups at Sept. 15 meeting

The City of Weston Commission opened its Sept. 15 meeting with a series of recognitions and proclamations.
Mayor Margaret Brown introduced Chief Sam Cavallari of the Broward Sheriff’s Office, who recognized deputies Carlos Martinez, Mike Belazair, Adrian Perez and detectives Ronald Fernandez and Arian Scott for their response to a strong‑arm robbery at a T‑Mobile in Lakes Plaza on Aug. 22. Chief Cavallari said deputies used the city license‑plate reader system and other investigative tools to apprehend the suspect within 14 minutes of dispatch. "Their quick actions as one united team clearly resulted in a safe positive outcome," he said.
The commission issued proclamations recognizing Sept. 15–Oct. 15, 2025 as Hispanic Heritage Month in Weston; Bernadette McDonald Guadalupe accepted the proclamation and spoke about her Puerto Rican heritage and longstanding community involvement. The City also designated Sept. 25 as Hunger Action Month to support Feeding South Florida; a representative from Feeding South Florida thanked the City for its support and described programs addressing food insecurity across Broward County.
The commission proclaimed National Diaper Need Awareness Week and invited the Greater Fort Lauderdale Diaper Bank’s executive director, Britney Wolf, to speak about diaper distribution and awareness activities; Wolf noted a City Hall drop‑off location. A proclamation also recognized Childhood Cancer Awareness Month and acknowledged local advocacy by Weston resident David Lister.
Mayor Brown reminded residents of hurricane season resources and upcoming budget hearings and invited organizations to partner with the city on ongoing programs. The recognitions were followed by the start of the formal budget hearing process.
