Weston presents proclamations and recognizes BSO rescuers, local literacy and wellness efforts

Mayor Margaret Brown used the Sept. 29 meeting to present several proclamations and recognize local partners and first responders.
BSO lifesaving recognition: Chief Todd Drazen and staff highlighted Lieutenant Christopher Floria and Lieutenant Steven Kravanick as BSO District Employees of the Month for off‑duty actions following a serious crash on I‑75 on Aug. 17 that required extrication and air rescue transfer to Broward Health. Staff described the trauma designation process and credited the lieutenants’ quick response with saving a life.
Literacy proclamation: The commission proclaimed Weston a Broward Reads City for 2025. Nancy Ajohan of the Children’s Services Council accepted the proclamation and described Broward Reads’ countywide literacy work, including placing more than 40,000 books into children’s hands annually and partnering with municipalities to promote school readiness and family engagement.
Domestic violence and mental health proclamations: The commission declared October 2025 Domestic Violence Awareness Month; Weston resident Lindsay Malpeka Bay accepted the proclamation and spoke about community fundraising and survivor advocacy in coordination with Women in Distress, whose CEO Linda Parker thanked the commission for support. The commission also designated Oct. 23, 2025 as the South Florida Mental Wellness Summit and Expo Day and Beth Tache described the summit program, keynote speaker and a $15 admission for the public.
These ceremonial recognitions highlighted city partnerships with county nonprofits and first responders and were followed by routine announcements and the evening’s public hearings.
