Scott County reviews new hires, asks for exception for one IT candidate and corrects supplemental life coverage

Scott County staff presented multiple personnel items, including a requested exception for one IT hire and a correction to the county’s supplemental life insurance policy.
IT leadership identified Christopher Clauer as the chosen candidate for the network systems administrator position; staff described Clauer as having more than eight years of IT experience and asked to hire him at step 7 (midpoint) and to grant an exception to vacation‑accrual timing. An IT representative said Clauer previously worked on Deere’s IT team and most recently was at Bidco Insurance; staff recommended bringing him on board with the board’s approval. Several other hires at entry-level rates were presented for detention/youth counselors, a corrections food services officer, a bailiff and a med‑comm dispatcher.
Separately, staff noted an earlier change to the county’s life insurance supplemental guarantee had been communicated incorrectly. Staff said that, because of a mixup with Minnesota Life and the broker, the supplemental guarantee for newly eligible employees will remain at $200,000 with a $500,000 maximum (reverting from a proposed higher guaranteed amount); staff said only rates will change going forward.
Board members expressed support for the hires and thanked staff for their recruitment work. Staff will proceed with onboarding and the corrected insurance plan parameters will be reflected in the county’s plan documents.
