Hood County authorizes EMS subsidy and increases volunteer fire department support for 2025–26

Hood County commissioners authorized two interlocal funding actions on Sept. 23: a $35,000 subsidy to Pecan Plantation EMS and renewal of 2025–26 interlocal agreements with nine volunteer fire departments that include a $5,000 increase for each department (raising annual funding to $125,000 per department), contingent upon required financial submissions to the auditor.
Commissioner Samuelson said county leaders met with the fire marshal, Texas EMS and Pecan EMS and recommended the subsidy after reviewing mutual-aid calls, insurance coverage for ambulances and worker’s compensation arrangements. “We came to a grand if it's agreeable to the rest of the court of a subsidy to Pecan EMS of $35,000,” Samuelson said, noting the subsidy is separate from the county’s existing subsidy to Texas EMS.
Commissioners also discussed removing ambulance-specific language from volunteer fire agreements and creating a separate EMS interlocal to avoid overlap. The nine volunteer departments’ agreements include a conditional $5,000 increase and require departments to submit complete financials to the auditor’s office to receive funds.
Both motions were approved unanimously, 5–0. County staff and legal counsel will finalize signatures on the interlocal agreements and track required financial submissions before disbursement.
