Child-advocacy center reports $250,000 grant and seeks continued county support; CPS board requests $20,000 line item

Representatives from child-welfare organizations briefed the commissioners court on June 17 about local services and funding needs. Margaret Karnar of the Paluxy River Children's Advocacy Center described free services for child-abuse victims, said the property for a new building has been deeded and reported more than half of the fundraising goal raised plus a recently notified $250,000 foundation grant. "We got a $250,000 grant from a foundation that I was told I could not get money from," Karnar said, and staff hope to break ground by September once permits and a TxDOT-required traffic study are complete.
Separately, Linda Durant and Celia Whitman representing the Hood County Protective Service Board clarified the board is a county fiduciary created by contract with the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services (DFPS) and is not the state investigative CPS agency; they asked that the court continue the prior-year allocation of $20,000 to cover items the state will not fund (initial clothing allowances, drug testing, family-conference supplies).
Commissioners thanked both groups; no changes were approved at the meeting and staff later discussed how restricted grants and donated foundation funds may not be used for operational expenses.
