Hood County corrects county court-at-law judge salary to comply with state law, orders retroactive pay

Hood County Commissioners unanimously voted to adjust the County Court-at-Law judge's salary to comply with Government Code provisions that grant longevity and cross-credit for prior service in county-elected prosecutorial roles.
County staff explained House Bill 3474 (2023) provides cross-credit so prior service as an elected county attorney or district attorney counts toward judicial longevity tiers. Because the current judge had qualifying prior service, the auditor calculated two tiers of raises that had not been applied. The auditor recommended a one-time payment to cover retroactive amounts and an ongoing increase going forward.
Commissioners directed the county auditor to fund the retroactive pay from contingency (account 010-4090-49700), with the total FY2025 budget impact calculated at $64,039.73. Commissioners noted the state contributes toward judicial salary tiers and that the county's payment reflects local compliance with state law.
The motion passed unanimously.
