Cerritos confirms $5M for Del Amo bridge project; residents warn Metro extension could stall work

City staff told the Cerritos City Council that $5 million in federal funds secured with the assistance of former Congresswoman Michelle Steele has been received and earmarked for construction of the Del Amo Boulevard bridge project.
City Manager Robert Lopez said staff is coordinating with appropriate agencies to set the funds aside for construction and that an additional $5 million request submitted by current Representative Derek Tran is pending in Congress. "The funds are earmarked specifically for construction," Lopez said.
Resident David Pailman (Pileman) warned the council that proposals to extend Metro’s Southeast Gateway rail line through parts of Cerritos could jeopardize the bridge project and require redesign: "I fear that with a continued push toward extending the Metro Southeast gateway line will stall the bridge project," he said during public comment. Pailman urged council and staff to protect the bridge project’s timeline.
Mayor Frank Yokoyama said continued transparency will be provided to residents and asked staff to update the public on the project and funding as plans progress.
