LA Metro updates Cerritos council on I‑605 South Street off‑ramp construction

LA Metro briefed the Cerritos City Council on Jan. 9 about the southbound I‑605 South Street off‑ramp improvements, which Metro said are designed to ease congestion, improve traffic flow and boost pedestrian safety.
“Ultimately, when the final improvements are complete, there will be a total of four lanes on the off ramp, two turning lanes in each direction,” Ron DeSias, Metro community relations manager for the project, said during the presentation.
Metro representatives said construction began in mid‑2024, the project is roughly 50 percent complete and a short construction phase in March will require temporarily reducing the off‑ramp from three travel lanes to two for about 10 days. Metro expects to move through that short stage and finish the remaining work in spring, to be followed by a one‑year plant‑establishment period.
Other planned improvements include wider crosswalks, an ADA‑compliant sidewalk ramp at the intersection, upgraded street lighting and signal‑timing optimization. Michael Tahan, Metro senior director for construction management, told the council the project team has coordinated with Caltrans and local stakeholders, including dealerships and the mall, and plans additional community outreach and a follow‑up meeting next month.
Councilmembers pressed Metro on temporary lane markings and visibility during construction; Metro’s resident engineer said restripping is scheduled next week and agreed to follow up with the city on any remaining safety concerns.
Metro noted the project is funded through voter‑approved transportation measures and state sources and said all work within the project limits is covered by the established budget.
