Board approves Expanded Learning Opportunities Plan as district adds workforce and health supports

Travis Burke presented Version 3 of the district's Expanded Learning Opportunities Plan (ELO-P) and asked the board to approve updates that expand workforce development, mentoring, tutoring and health and safety supports for after-school programming.
Burke said the program served 10,697 students so far this year, up from 10,343 reported last June, and highlighted new activities such as teacher-run clubs, expanded sports mentorship, mentorship tied to career-readiness, and partnerships to provide paid work experience and training. "A lot of the input we receive from our surveys of students and families are that students want to earn money, but also learn skills for beyond graduation," Burke said.
Trustees asked how the district monitors program quality, whether academic homework time is provided, and how providers are overseen. Burke said program development specialists monitor sites, programs must include an academic component, and staff routinely follow up on complaints and compliance. Trustees requested clearer pathways for teacher input and for more detail on how parallel enrichment programs are managed at sites where primary providers subcontract elements of programming.
After discussion the board approved the ELO-P update by recorded vote. Staff said they will return with additional details about provider monitoring, program coordination with classroom teachers, and outreach to increase participation.
