Mission Viejo council directs city to proceed with annual weed abatement on noncompliant parcels

The Mission Viejo City Council voted unanimously on Aug. 26 to instruct the Public Services Department to proceed with removal of weeds on parcels less than one acre that remained noncompliant with the city’s annual weed‑abatement notices.
Public Services Operations Manager Cory Gonyea presented the staff report for the public hearing, noting a prior Council resolution setting the hearing date and that notices were mailed to affected properties. Gonyea said most owners complied by the due date; since the last meeting six properties were noncompliant, two became compliant and four remained noncompliant.
The staff recommendation, citing Government Code sections referenced in the agenda packet, was that the council overrule any objections and authorize abatement on remaining noticed parcels. The council opened the hearing, received no written comments or speakers, closed the hearing and then approved the recommended action.
Councilmember Kelly moved the recommended action and the motion passed unanimously with Mayor Pro Tem Bucknam absent. Staff said it will work with property owners and follow government‑code procedures for abatement and notice.
