The Mission Viejo City Council concluded its Sept. 9 session with tributes to longtime City Attorney Bill Curley, who died days before the meeting. Council members, staff and outside attorneys described Curley as a vigorous defender of the city, an institutional resource and a colleague with a distinctive sense of humor.
Mayor Pro Tem and members of the dais said Curley served the city for 21 years and had been consistently available to staff and elected officials. “Bill was a fierce defender of the city and staff,” the presiding official said during the opening remarks, noting Curley’s long service and the council’s plan to adjourn in his honor. Multiple staff members recounted Curley’s accessibility and mentorship; one said Curley was reachable “24/7” and always returned emails. Another staff member recounted personal memories of Curley’s wit and assistance across planning and legal matters.
The council agreed to lower the city flag for the week and adjourned the meeting in Curley’s memory. The mayor (Robert Reich) was absent from the meeting and asked the presiding official to read a prepared statement expressing personal condolences.
