The Mission Viejo City Council on Aug. 26 presented a proclamation recognizing National Service Dog Month and the 50th anniversary of Canine Companions.
Mayor presented the proclamation and invited local volunteer Jan Hepert to describe her role raising puppies for Canine Companions. Hepert said she raises puppies until they go to the organization’s training “university,” then they train for roles that include physical assistance, hearing assistance, PTSD support and services for people with autism. She noted the Southern California regional office is in Oceanside and that the program provides dogs to qualified individuals free of charge.
Hepert introduced school‑based facility dogs currently placed at Bathgate School and Castile Elementary and thanked the city for the recognition.
The council did not take action beyond the proclamation. The presentation concluded with photos and a brief reception for attendees.
