Board approves multiple Gateway charter renewals and two additional renewals

Presenters from Gateway Community Charters, including Dr. Jason Sample, and school leaders outlined each school’s model, student supports and outcomes; students and parents offered testimony in public hearing remarks.
District staff told the board that Community Collaborative Charter School (CCCS), Community Outreach Academy (COA) and Sacramento Academic & Vocational Academy (SAVA) met the required standards for renewal and, because some operate as dashboard-alternative-status (DAS) schools, were reviewed on performance and programmatic criteria appropriate to those settings. Futures High School and Higher Learning Academy were described as "middle-performing" under the statutory framework and eligible for five-year renewals. The district review team recommended approval after working with charter representatives to clarify petition elements.
The board opened public hearings, heard parental and student support testimony, and then approved the staff recommendations by roll call. Motions to adopt renewal resolutions (including Resolution 1425 for Futures High and Resolution 1426 for Higher Learning Academy) were made and seconded on the floor and carried.
What happens next: The renewals take effect under the timetable set by the district and charter agreements. The district review team retained authority to monitor performance and any terms included in the renewed petitions.
