Board approves multiple expulsions and readmissions in single session

The board considered multiple expulsion cases — identified in the agenda by case numbers such as A72-24, A17-25, A18-25, A19-25, A20-25, 821-25, A22-25, A23-25, A24-25, A25-25, A26-25 and A27-25 — and approved motions to adopt the recommended expulsions or corrective actions. Motions were routinely made by trustees on the dais (frequently Trustee Bridal or Trustee Rachel) and seconded (commonly by Trustee Jefferson or Trustee Boyd). The clerk conducted roll-call votes; on several items individual trustees recorded No votes but the majority approved the recommendation.
The board also acted on readmission items, approving readmission for students in cases identified as A44-23, 881-23, 85-24, 815-24, A18-24, 834-24, A41-24, A56-24, 861-24 and A64-24, among others. Those motions, too, were approved by roll call after a mover and second were recorded.
What the board did not do in these items was debate policy changes on discipline at length; the actions were procedural votes to adopt staff recommendations for individual cases. Several trustees thanked staff and legal counsel for their work bringing the cases forward and noted the gravity of exclusionary discipline decisions.
