Students and staff recognized; district highlights Aquatic Center, wellness awards and school week proclamations

Ashley Guzman, ASB president at Canyon Springs High School, detailed a strong start to the school year — a well-attended freshman Link Crew orientation, a new cell-phone policy intended to improve classroom focus, expanded dual-enrollment courses (up from 72 to 196 students), and the completion and ribbon-cutting of the new Aquatic Center. "Our strive for 95 campaign focuses on students maintaining their 95 positive attendance because attendance matters," Guzman told the board.
Kaiser Permanente representatives and district staff announced that Chaparral Hills Elementary and Valley View High School received the Alliance for a Healthier Generation’s 'America’s Healthiest School' recognition for exemplary practices in family engagement and staff well-being. David Matza of Kaiser Permanente summarized the organization’s long-term partnership and grants to the district, and principals from both schools accepted the award and thanked staff.
The board unanimously approved a slate of resolutions recognizing: Athletic Director Back to School Appreciation Week (Res. 2025-26-16), Hispanic Heritage Month (Res. 2025-26-17), Bullying Prevention and Awareness Month (Res. 2025-26-18), World Mental Health Day (Res. 2025-26-19), Week of the School Administrator (Res. 2025-26-20), and National School Lunch Week (Res. 2025-26-21). Accepting speakers emphasized family engagement, mental-health services, school nutrition and staff well-being.
What’s next: The district will publicize the recognitions and continue the student-centered campaigns (attendance, PBIS, ‘‘No Place for Hate’’) and the superintendent noted several upcoming events, including an HBCU fair and cultural festivities.
