Madison County approves bridge contract, multiple wage and staffing resolutions; schedules solar zoning hearing

The Madison County Board of Supervisors on June 10 approved a series of routine resolutions including wage changes, contract renewals, equipment relocation and a bridge contract award.
Secondary Roads Engineer Mike Hackett briefed the board on a June 17 bridge letting in Ames for a reinforced concrete slab bridge on Rusting Avenue (75 feet by 24.5 feet). He reported three bidders and identified Jasper Construction Services Inc. of Newton, Iowa as the low bidder at $597,600.62; Hackett said the engineer's estimate was $615,971 and that the work is federal-aid funded through the Iowa Department of Transportation letting process.
The board also approved multiple personnel motions: wage updates for county offices, the hiring of part-time paramedics (one hire listed as "Amy" at $18 per hour effective June 20), and a batch of other pay adjustments to take effect in fiscal year 2026. Members discussed corrections to certain sheriff's office rates and agreed to seek the sheriff's concurrence before finalizing changes that depend on elected-official payroll authority.
Contracts and renewals approved included a relocation of the courthouse camera/server system (Johnson Controls), a yearly license/support agreement with Solutions for specialty software, and a maintenance renewal for the Black Ice TIFF viewer. The board voted to group and approve several temporary secondary-road closure resolutions associated with maintenance and construction.
On planning and land use, the board set a public hearing for July 8 at 6 p.m. to consider a solar-energy-assistance zoning ordinance (an extension of the existing moratorium with an added 12-month provision or until a new ordinance is adopted). The board also discussed scheduling for auditor candidate interviews and the logistics of public interview sessions and deliberations in order to comply with recent court guidance.
