David Ackley, Lincoln County veteran service officer, briefed the commission on Aug. 5 about benefits available to veterans, including the disabled‑veteran property tax exemption and related benefits such as special license plates and waived state park entrance fees for those rated permanently and totally disabled by the Department of Veterans Affairs.
Ackley said county records show roughly 110 veterans who may be eligible but noted some records may be out of date if veterans have moved or self‑filed with the VA. “We have about 110 that I show that are eligible for these programs,” Ackley said, adding that the office can only see full records when the veteran has given a power of attorney or representation to the county office.
Commissioners directed Ackley to proactively contact the veterans on the list and offer help filing by the November application deadline so eligible veterans do not miss available tax relief. One commissioner summarized the outreach plan: county staff will reach out to the listed veterans, confirm owner‑occupancy and eligibility status, and provide application assistance where possible.
Ackley also reminded the commission that Thursday, Aug. 7 is Purple Heart Recognition Day and confirmed Lincoln County’s Purple Heart County status and signage at state highway entrances.
What happens next: David Ackley will contact the veterans on the county list to assess eligibility and assist with filing; commissioners expect outreach to be completed before the November filing window.
