Tustin Unified staff described a district initiative to focus Tier 1 instruction on priority standards and teacher-driven improvement through collaborative partnerships with teachers on special assignment (TOSAs).
Ally Del Castillo and secondary TOSAs outlined a model in which teachers and TOSA partners select a skill or priority standard, plan a lesson, implement it, gather data and revise using a Plan-Do-Study-Act process. Del Castillo told the board the work is “focused on the skills our students need to walk away with when they leave TUSD,” and presenters emphasized teacher choice and coaching as central features.
Teachers who participated said the partnership felt more individualized than prior models. One teacher described it as “a much more flexible, teacher focused, what is our goal and what you wanna work on,” and multiple presenters cited the value of shared planning, demonstration lessons, and using data to improve instruction.
The board was shown video examples of TOSAs and classroom teachers in action and heard that the approach aims to make professional development immediately useful in daily instruction. No formal board action was required; the presentation concluded with an offer to take questions and continue site-level expansion of the collaborative model.
