SVUSD highlights Summer TLC program; averages 690 weekly and aims to expand teen camp

Rayna/ Re(y)na Morris, manager of expanded learning services, presented the Saddleback Valley Unified School District—s Summer TLC program, describing enrollment, operations and student benefits.
Morris said the program averaged about 690 participants weekly this summer at nine elementary sites, operating Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Summer TLC includes a teen camp for students transitioning from sixth to seventh grade, activities and off-site excursions such as bowling and visits to local attractions, and a newly added ELOP camp for students in expanded learning opportunities. Morris said the district hopes to expand the program to include incoming eighth graders next year.
She read testimonials from teen campers and parents who described social and developmental benefits; a parent testimonial on the record said the program is "a godsend for working parents" and praised staff communication and support for a child on the mild autism spectrum. Morris described the program as community-facing with some slots open to non-district students when space allows.
Board members thanked staff for the program and noted goals for returning to pre-2020 attendance levels when weekly participation exceeded 1,000.
