Gates Elementary parents seek clear ICE-response protocols; superintendent promises outreach

Aline Strickler (speaking for Gates Elementary parents) said an arrest near a campus heightened fears and asked whether the district will establish safe zones, offer alternative transportation, keep students in school until a trusted adult arrives, and provide rapid multilingual notifications to families. "Our families need answers," she told the board.
Amber Fonts, a Gates parent, asked the district to prepare specific policies and communication plans before the first day of school, suggesting alternate drop-off locations, partnerships with community organizations for emergency pickup, and multilingual robocalls.
Superintendent Dr. Turner responded that the district has protocols in place, principals have been trained, and the district plans to send a letter to families early next week describing how incidents will be handled and how schools will communicate with families. Dr. Turner said the district would share details with the Gates community and thanked parents for raising concerns.
The board acknowledged the requests and expressed intent to continue coordination with staff and local enforcement to ensure student safety; no new policy was adopted during the meeting.
