Irvine Unified honors retirees and celebrates student achievements

At its regular meeting the Irvine Unified School District board set aside significant time to recognize retiring staff and to celebrate student accomplishments.
District staff and board members honored dozens of retirees from across the district—s certificated, classified and administrative ranks. Presenters read short biographies for each retiree, highlighting years of service and post-retirement plans. The board and colleagues publicly thanked the employees for decades of service and noted the substantial cumulative years of service represented by the cohort.
The board also recognized University High School—s Science Bowl and Ocean Science Bowl teams. David Knight, science department chair, and student captains described recent achievements: regional championships, strong historic finishes at nationals and continued qualification for the National Science Bowl and Ocean Science Bowl. Students thanked PTSA and IUSD for financial and logistic support.
During public comment, community members acknowledged retirees and asked the district to consider additional recognition for the late coach Chris Conlon, citing his long coaching career and community contributions; trustees responded with condolences and members said they would consider appropriate recognition options that accord with district policy.
The board encouraged the honored staff and students and then proceeded with the rest of the meeting.
