The Irvine Unified School District board on June 10 honored the Sierra Vista Middle School Science Olympiad team after the group captured a national championship and posted what coaches described as a record team score.
Coach Sean Alova told the board the varsity team scored 93 points at the national tournament in Nebraska, surpassing previous winning totals and earning medals in 18 of 23 events. "Without all of your support, we would not be where we are today," Alova said, crediting parents, teachers and community partners for the program's success.
Two student captains described how the program shaped them beyond competition. "Science Olympiad has allowed me to grow in both my academic and social skills," said Adi Suresh, who described improved study skills and public speaking. Lydia Lowe, another captain, said the team created connections that transcend state lines and gave her opportunities to coach younger students.
County Supervisor Don Wagner and several board members praised the students and coach, highlighting lessons from early-season setbacks and the value of teamwork. Wagner presented small certificates from the county and emphasized the lifetime impact of the students' achievement.
Board members also connected the team's accomplishment to district priorities, noting that extracurricular programs foster resilience and leadership. The board invited the students to remain for the meeting and publicly thanked coaches, families and volunteers.
The board took no policy action related to the award; the presentation was made under the board's special presentations agenda item.
