Students, teachers and SRO honored in community showcases at school board meeting

BREA — The Brea Olinda Unified School District board began its April 15 meeting with student reports and school showcases from multiple campuses and presented recognitions for staff, volunteers and a school resource officer.
Student reports: Presentations included Brea Junior High students Brooke Samuelson and Erin Coe, who said a "Light the Night" fundraiser raised $2,900 for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Brea Olinda High School ASB president Elise Chiu described recent ASB events, athletics successes and the school's preparations for AP testing. Laurel Magnet and Olinda Elementary students and principals highlighted RIASEC career-exploration work, family-engagement events, and Laural/Olinda's efforts to boost attendance and social-emotional supports.
Olinda Distinguished School recognition: Superintendent Brenda Leon and the board congratulated Olinda Elementary on being named a 2025 California Distinguished School, noting the award went to 336 elementary schools statewide. Olinda's principal Aubrey Lim described the school's ELA and math progress, improved chronic absenteeism and expanded support services, including a wellness center and counseling interns.
Community and PTO updates: PTO Council president Danny Repp summarized district PTO activities across schools and reported 85 projects and 100 students participated in the district PTO science fair. The board read several donor acknowledgements from the Brea Rotary Charitable Fund and Special Olympics for student programs.
Recognition: The board presented a plaque to Officer Stephen Wolf in recognition of his service as the district's school resource officer for 2023–25 and thanked district volunteers and staff for National Library Week and Teacher Appreciation events.
