During the public-comment period at the June 24 meeting, two speakers asked the board for support on behalf of students.
Michael Mulroy, a parent and board member of the nonprofit Robin's Nest, thanked the district for prior collaboration and requested the board consider a no-cost memorandum of understanding to allow Robin's Nest to continue and expand services. Mulroy described Robin's Nest's work providing lodging, food, clothing, tutoring and mental-wellness support for at-risk and homeless students referred by the district, and said the organization helps students stay in school and pursue self-sufficiency.
Mike Vargas, Estancia High School head football coach, spoke on behalf of his program and parents, asking the board to consider support for equipment and a building for the campus so students have facilities and a legacy to use. Vargas said Estancia fields one of the smaller football programs in the county and urged stewardship of district resources to benefit Westside students. "What you have the opportunity to do tonight is, as these young men and the parents that are here, leave a legacy for something that's going to outlive," he said.
Both public commenters framed their requests as community-benefit proposals to help students; no formal board action on either request was recorded during the meeting.
