Assembly awards $205,000 contract for West Chatanica trail improvements

The Fairbanks North Star Borough Assembly Finance Committee voted to award IFB 26009 to Korpella Construction for $205,000 to develop a trail and wayfinding system in the 459-acre West Chatanica Recreation subdivision.
Staff said the project covers clearing a minimum 15-foot swath and leveling an eight-foot path; no gravel will be added. “The bid from Corpela Construction is the lowest responsive, responsible bid out of the seven bids that we received,” staff told the committee and recommended approval for the $205,000 award.
Assembly members pressed staff on technical details and contractor locality. Ms. Wilson asked whether the surface would be dirt or rock; staff replied the work consists of clearing and leveling and that gravel would not be added. Staff also said the winning contractor is based in Hyder, Alaska, and confirmed seven bids were submitted.
Ms. Reeves moved to award IFB 26009 and Ms. Haney seconded. A roll-call vote recorded affirmative responses from present members and the chair announced the contract award. No amendments or conditions were recorded in the committee discussion.
The award authorizes borough staff to proceed with the contract. Staff advised that trail dedication and future construction of trail amenities are separate from this contracting step; the subdivision retains areas intended for future trail development and the borough will coordinate those improvements in future processes.
