Minnehaha County adopts ordinance allowing up to two nonresident appointees to HRC

The Minnehaha County Commission on Tuesday adopted Ordinance MC6925 on its second reading to adjust residency rules for appointments to the county's Housing and Redevelopment Commission (HRC).
Meredith Jerko of the commission office said the HRC, created in 2010, oversees Safe Home, a Housing First program. She told commissioners the ordinance would allow ‘‘at most 2 commissioners on the HRC to be nonresidents of Minnehaha County given that they reside in a directly adjacent county,’’ expanding eligibility so some applicants who work in the industry but live just outside the county can apply.
Jerko said the commission would still post openings on the county website, solicit applications and that the commission retains final appointment authority. Commissioners moved, seconded and approved adoption by roll call; the clerk recorded ayes for all listed commissioners.
Jerko confirmed HRC seats are voluntary and typically filled by community members with housing or financial-services experience; terms last five years with a two‑term limit. The commission noted the next opening in November and another in 2026.
