NDOW Eastern Region reports dry guzzlers, mountain goat surveys and new fish stocking plans

Scott Roberts and Cody Burn of the Nevada Department of Wildlife’s Eastern Region presented field updates to the Elko County Advisory Board on regional surveys, water supplies, fish stocking and forthcoming proposed fishing regulations.
Scott Roberts said the region is in a busy field season and crews are conducting a second mountain goat survey; early survey signs were positive but the team will monitor kids post-weaning. He reported that “tens of guzzlers” are dry across the region and staff are prioritizing refilling units with the highest likelihood of benefitting wildlife, including work by contractors and local partners near fires that threatened infrastructure. Roberts noted one guzzler was a total loss and another nearly lost but saved through local action.
Cody Burn told the CAB the region received about 6,000 wipers from the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources and stocked them into South Fork Reservoir to allow multi-year tracking of growth and survival. Burn previewed proposals to be presented in September: simplifying the Eastern Region bait regulation to allow commercially prepared or preserved baits (while maintaining a ban on live fish), a catch-and-kill requirement for Northern Pike at Cummins Lake, and an ice-hole size modification to permit spearfishing or bowfishing in a 1-by-2-foot opening. Burn said the Cummins Lake and White Pine County-specific proposals will be action items at the September meeting.
Both staff invited questions and community feedback. The CAB thanked NDOW staff and noted the next commission meeting is scheduled for September in Las Vegas, with the CAB meeting on September 22.
