The Elko County Board of Commissioners on the meeting record directed county staff to investigate the status of a liquor license tied to a Spring Creek premises where competing applications and a Chapter 11 filing were reported, approved a five-year road maintenance agreement with National Oilwell Varco LP, accepted a $22,000 Joining Forces Program grant from the Nevada Department of Public Safety, and authorized a conditional purchase of a 40-by-60 building for use by a volunteer fire district.
On the liquor license matter, staff explained that formal consideration of the license holder, Jason Schroeder, was limited because required proof of service had not been received. A motion to "initiate an investigation and report back with findings regarding the status of the license" passed after public comment and commission discussion. Kayla Myers, who identified herself as manager of Meeley's Family Bar and Grill, told the commissioners the business had been operating under an agreement to assume the lease while Schroeder pursued bankruptcy proceedings and that the competing applications and court filings left the business unable to complete a license renewal. "He initiated a Chapter 11 bankruptcy ... so with that, that created a stay order," Myers said, describing how the timing affected their ability to renew a license.
Staff clarified that, based on county code and the sheriff's office guidance, the license had not been formally revoked and that the county code (Elko County Code 64-8) provides a 10-day late fee and grounds for revocation after 30 days, though revocation is not always automatic. Lieutenant Doug Fisher of the sheriff's office said he could provide an update by the commission's next meeting or "by the fifteenth" and would report back on any court action.
The board then considered the county's role as the Board of County Highway Commissioners and approved a five-year extension of a road maintenance agreement with National Oilwell Varco LP for access roads in O'Neil Basin. Staff said such agreements allow private operators to maintain access roads to their operations and reduce county maintenance burdens; the motion to approve carried by voice vote.
The board accepted a $22,000 Joining Forces Program grant from the Nevada Department of Public Safety that will cover overtime tied to grant activities; county salaries provided the 25% match. Commissioners approved the acceptance by motion and voice vote.
On community fire protection, commissioners combined an informational item and an action request from the Elko County Fire District. Staff and a volunteer fire district representative described a building that would be adapted as a fire station. The board authorized purchase of the building conditioned on successful change-of-use rezoning, electrical and utility inspections and the appropriate permits. Staff described the building as having a shell permit, well and power on site, and estimated occupancy could be possible within about two months if inspections and re-zoning proceed as expected.
The consent agenda was approved, and commissioners used the reports section to flag future possible agenda items including a grazing resolution and updates on diesel tax revenue and RTC activities. The meeting adjourned with no final public comment.
