La Palma council approves consent items including required $2.2M PERS payment; League delegate appointments pass with one dissent

At its Aug. 5 meeting, the La Palma City Council approved consent calendar items and a required annual California Public Employees’ Retirement System (CalPERS) payment of approximately $2,200,000 for unfunded accrued liability.
Mayor Pro Tem Nitesh Patel pulled the register demands to explain the large payment and its purpose. City staff explained the payment is required and is distinct from discretionary prepayments; paying the annual amount upfront yields an approximate 3.3% discount (about $75,000) compared with monthly payments. Staff said the city can return with information if the council wants to consider discretionary prepayment options in the future.
The council moved, seconded and voted unanimously to approve the consent calendar and the required payment. Separately, the council appointed a voting delegate and alternate to the League of California Cities’ general assembly: Councilmember Vikesh Patel was appointed as the voting delegate and Councilmember Debbie Baker as alternate. That motion passed 4–1.
Council asked staff to include the outstanding unfunded liability balance in the annual financial statements and to provide additional detail if council requests consideration of discretionary payments in a future meeting.
