The La Palma City Council voted 4–0 to reschedule the city—s fourth annual Festival of Nations for Sept. 20, 2025, approving staff—s recommendation after a discussion about cost and logistics.
Staff said the rescheduled event will cost roughly $50,000, a figure that includes the carnival vendor contract, portable restrooms, radios and staff time. “This does come at a cost of roughly $50,000,” city staff said, noting the carnival vendor had provided a 10% discount after the rain-canceled event in April and that roughly 90% of parade participants and vendors had indicated they could attend the new date.
Council members weighed the expense against the city—s modest surplus. One resident, Erin Zagorski, urged council to skip to next year and use the funds to plan a larger event with more lead time: “I think that the ship has sailed... I think that I understand it—s a big event for our community, but we we don—t know if everybody can reschedule,” Zagorski said.
Council Member Nitesh Patel moved to reschedule; the motion passed unanimously with Council Member Keogh absent. Staff said contracts for the event would be returned to council for approval in August and advised about possible risks of higher temperatures and air-quality problems in September due to regional fires.
The council directed staff to proceed with planning and return with contract approvals as needed.
