Fullerton — The City Council voted Sept. 16 to move forward with a budgeted $2 million Lyons Field turf-replacement project, awarding the turf contract and authorizing associated amenities including dugout benches and five scoreboards.
Deputy City Manager Daisy Perez summarized the project as a $1.5 million base turf contract plus additional items and contingency to bring the total to $2 million from park-dedicated funds previously approved by council. Staff noted the field is used heavily year-round and that the typical synthetic turf lifespan of about 10 years has been exceeded at Lyons Field; meeting the current construction window (around Thanksgiving) was a priority to avoid disrupting user seasons.
Included in the scope are 16 dugout benches, five scoreboards, conference-room upgrades and an optional bleacher shade structure. Staff recommended proceeding with the field replacement while deferring the shade structure if scheduling prevents installation without turf damage; any leftover funds can potentially be reallocated within parks to address other small improvements.
Public comments came from leagues and residents who supported the replacement and suggested sponsorship and advertising opportunities on scoreboards to offset costs. Council members discussed long-term maintenance, potential sponsorship revenue, and use of existing park-dedicated funds.
The council approved the staff recommendation; the project will be administered through the parks capital program and returned for any specific scope-level approvals or change orders as required by procurement rules.
