Council approves amended lease and $121,000 allocation to expand Fountain Valley Sports Park

The Fountain Valley City Council unanimously approved an amended and restated lease with Orange County on Feb. 18 that secures roughly 16 additional acres for expansion of the Fountain Valley Sports Park as part of a broader Mile Square Regional Park rehabilitation.
Rob Frizzell, who presented the item, said the city had previously secured 14.6 acres and continued negotiations resulted in an increase to about 16 acres. The county identified $121,000 in infrastructure relocation and site-improvement costs for phase one; staff recommended using Alternative Park Fee Fund balances to cover that allocation. Staff reported a current park-fee fund balance of about $580,783.
Council members called the expansion a —one-in-a-generation— opportunity for recreation and praised staff for negotiations with county partners. The council voted 5–0 to approve the amended lease and the proposed $121,000 allocation from the Alternative Park Fee Fund.
Staff said future design and parking work will be coordinated through the city parks master plan and that staff will continue discussions with county partners to avoid unnecessary rework of recently completed infrastructure.
