Yankton County approves $174,663 ambulance remount and adds power-load device; vote 4-1

The Yankton County Commission voted Aug. 5 to remount the county's 2015 ambulance on a chassis available from Arrow Manufacturing for $174,663 and to install a used power-load stretcher lift for $14,900.
Troy, who presented the proposal to the commission, said the remount opportunity uses a chassis that is on hand and that postponing could add tens of thousands of dollars to the price once chassis lead times reopen. "If we even wait a year... this is probably going to cost an additional $20,000 more," he said, arguing the purchase is time-sensitive.
Commission staff explained the county maintains a separate accumulation fund earmarked for ambulance replacement; that fund currently holds $171,000, leaving a $3,663 difference if the commission proceeds with the remount and power-load installation. The presenter said county budget lines for 2026 include an allocation that could cover the power-load if the commission prefers to defer that charge to next year.
Commissioner Dan opposed the motion, citing the county's broader budget stress and a preference to delay a capital purchase while reserves remain under pressure. The commission held a roll-call vote: Don, Ryan, Wanda and John voted in favor; Dan voted against. The motion carried.
Commissioners asked staff to coordinate procurement (advertise where required), secure trade-in allowances (the vendor listed a $10,000 allowance), and manage timing so that installation and payment align with the county's budget planning.
