Buena Park council backs planning for veterans resource fair and flag distribution

Community Services Supervisor Connie Hurtado described the resource fair as a one‑stop opportunity for veterans to connect with service providers on health care, legal assistance, financial literacy and mental health. She proposed a pilot resource fair budget of $650 and a veterans flag distribution program budget of $1,300, noting staff would verify that recipients are Buena Park residents and veterans.
Under the flag distribution plan staff would prepare an application or nomination process, verify eligibility, and create delivery route maps so council members could personally deliver a 12‑by‑18‑inch flag mounted on a wooden block and a thank‑you note in November. “This initiative not only symbolizes the city's gratitude toward our veterans, but also serves as a tangible representation of your commitment to their well‑being,” Hurtado said.
Councilmembers expressed broad support while asking practical questions about verification, scheduling and scale. Staff said they anticipate about 50 veterans for year one and would scale budgets if participation is higher. Members suggested the city work with county resources and use nominations and applications to verify veteran status.
Council did not take a formal funding vote at the meeting; the direction was to develop the programs, perform outreach, and return with details and any requested budget amendments.
