Residents and Chapman students pitch sustainability plan; high-school robotics team seeks funding

During the public-comment period on Jan. 21, residents and visiting academics urged the Brea City Council to support a Chapman University environmental-science capstone that will produce a preliminary sustainability plan and greenhouse-gas inventory for the city.
Dennis Arp and Gina Santos, both representing the Brea Sustainability Group, described the project as a chance to gather data, meet residents and create a blueprint that could help Brea pursue grants. Professor Tom Piazza of Chapman University said the students will conduct outreach, prepare baseline greenhouse-gas inventories and offer recommendations; he requested time to present the students’ final report in May.
Separately, Mubotics, a local high-school robotics team, described recent competitive success and requested a spot on a future council agenda. Team members said the program needs about $100,000 for parts, travel and competition fees and detailed short-term fundraising options, including school or booster accounts or checks to a North Orange County account while the team transitions away from a school ASB account.
Council and staff offered procedural follow-ups: staff agreed to arrange a presentation slot for the Chapman students and provided guidance on current donation channels for the robotics team.
