Aliso Viejo — The council presented a certificate recognizing Orange County Fire Authority Division Chief Mike Summers for his response to an incident in Trabuco Canyon on Sept. 9, 2024, in which Summers and others rescued a trapped captain and helped evacuate hikers.
Councilmembers praised Summers and noted the city’s high safety rankings, saying residents benefit from local public‑safety personnel. "Our city is consistently ranked one of the safest cities in California and in the nation," Mayor Ackley said, crediting police and fire services.
Summers recounted arriving at the scene, locating a stalled brush truck and a captain stuck in a rock slide, and coordinating aerial reconnaissance and extraction. "I was able to safely extract a fire captain... and we were able to safely get those 3 adults and child from that trailhead," Summers said, and thanked the council and city staff for the recognition.
