Aliso Viejo — The council voted unanimously to adopt the 2025 California building and fire codes by reference, including local amendments and the new consolidated wildland‑urban interface provisions.
Justin Barry, the city's deputy building official, said the city updates these codes every three years and that many changes focus on fire‑safety measures and "home hardening" in areas newly designated as high fire severity zones on Cal Fire maps. "They are going to be taking multiple sections of different codes and combining them into one to simplify it for home hardening," Barry said.
Ryan Aloy, an assistant fire marshal with the Orange County Fire Authority, explained the new code consolidates chapter 7A and other sections that address ember intrusion, vegetation management and residential requirements into the wildland‑urban interface code. "Chapter 7A of the building code... is now in the wildland urban interface code," Aloy said, noting Chapter 49 vegetation‑management standards are also incorporated.
Councilmembers asked clarifying questions but recorded no fiscal impacts; after staff presentation the council moved and approved the ordinance amendments by roll call.
