Commission approves plan to pursue left-turn signal upgrades at Meyer Drive and updates traffic-committee bylaws

The Royal Oak City Commission approved two traffic-committee items on Feb. 10: pursuit of left-turn signal upgrades at the Meyer Drive/Coolidge intersection and an update to the traffic-committee bylaws.
City Engineer Donahue said a crash-history analysis showed dedicated left-turn signals at the Meyer Drive intersection are warranted, but the existing span-wire pole configuration cannot support additional signals safely. Staff recommended pursuing highway safety improvement grant funding to install a mast-arm or box-span signal configuration; if grant funding is not secured, the project will be programmed in the capital improvement plan and could use road millage dollars.
Separately the traffic committee proposed a bylaw change to hold annual elections every January for chair and vice chair to align with other boards and committees; the committee also nominated its current chair and vice chair to remain for the coming year. Commissioners voted to approve both actions as part of a combined motion.
