Yankton County Veterans Service Office reports $479,941 in retroactive payouts and rising monthly compensation

YANKTON — The Yankton County Veterans Service Office reported measurable gains this year in veteran claims and benefits, telling the commission the office completed more than 400 forms and is managing 803 Yankton County veteran files.
‘‘Claim activity remains strong so far this year,’’ the Veterans Service representative told commissioners, reporting 74 open claims — 61 of them for Yankton County veterans — and noting four claims completed to date. The office said its work produced a monthly compensation increase of $151,292.31 and retroactive payments totalling $479,941.27 for veterans represented by the county office.
The office also discussed transportation: three volunteer drivers are in service with a fourth onboarding, and the office provided 18 trips serving 25 veterans, primarily to the Sioux Falls VA Hospital and nearby VA clinics.
Commissioners thanked the office and asked about driver capacity and the possibility of sharing veteran-service duties with neighboring counties; staff said some neighboring counties already send veterans to Yankton because the county’s office is the only full-time VSO in the region and that the county may seek reimbursement arrangements.
The commission received the report and directed staff to provide periodic updates and, if requested by neighboring counties, an estimate for assuming additional service responsibilities.
