Kennett board adopts policy slate but tables proposal to require Robert’s Rules

KENNETT SQUARE, Pa. — The Kennett Consolidated School District board voted Nov. 10 to adopt a slate of updated policies but deferred a contested amendment that would have made Robert’s Rules of Order the required parliamentary authority.
Mister Kramer presented committee recommendations to adopt multiple policy sections (including budget and fiscal policies). The board approved the recommended slate by voice vote.
Separately, Miss Myers moved to amend policy 006 to replace language that says the board 'may use Robert’s Rules of Order, newly revised' with language stating the board 'will follow Robert’s Rules of Order, newly revised.' The amendment was seconded and debated: some trustees urged solicitor input and a workshop so all members—especially newly seated trustees—could understand implications and options.
President Cronenberg called the amendment to a voice vote; the amendment failed when several trustees voted 'opposed.' Mister Finnegan and other members said they preferred more discussion and a comparative analysis of current practice versus formal adoption; Miss Myers asked that the board document a parliamentary procedure it can reliably follow. After the failed amendment, the board voted to postpone further action on policy 006 to allow a fuller discussion and legal advice.
What happens next: Policy 006 will be revisited after a workshop and solicitor guidance; the other policy updates adopted at the meeting remain in effect.
