Royal Oak approves $45,000 CDBG grant for homeless assistance services

The Royal Oak City Commission approved a $45,000 grant July 28 to support homeless assistance services through the South Oakland Citizens for the Homeless, funded by Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) dollars.
Commissioner Douglas described the award as providing mental and physical health screening and treatment, substance-use treatment, and basic assistance including food, clothing and transportation intended to support clients seeking stable housing. "This is a $45,000 grant to the South Oakland shelter program that will provide their homeless clients with mental and physical health screening and treatment, substance abuse treatments, food, clothing, transportation services," Douglas said during discussion.
City staff and the city attorney corrected a staff report typographical error that had misnamed the recipient in one paragraph; the resolution and the contract documents themselves correctly list South Oakland Citizens for the Homeless as the awardee.
The motion to adopt the resolution passed by voice vote. City staff said the award is drawn from federal CDBG funds, which the manager noted support parks and housing repairs in other parts of the city.
What happens next: the recipient agency will provide services supported by the grant and the city will track use of the CDBG funds as required under federal program rules.
