Carmel schools outline plans to track clubs in student information system and launch UPK pilot

The Carmel Central School District presented trend data on extracurricular club enrollment and meeting frequency on Dec. 3 and outlined steps to formalize oversight.
Assistant Superintendent Lauren Santa Barbara said club attendance ranged widely by program, and that some clubs (for example, the Equity Team) intentionally maintain lower enrollment. To increase transparency and administrative oversight she recommended integrating club rosters into the student information system (Synergy) so advisors take real-time attendance tied to student profiles.
"What we spend our money on, we value," Santa Barbara said, explaining the proposed roster, attendance and advisor expectation documents that will standardize frequency, goals and reporting. She framed the change as part of alignment with the New York State Blue Ribbon Commission pathways, which the district will begin implementing ahead of the 2027 rollout.
Superintendent Dr. Liz Kennedy also updated the board on Universal Pre-K: informational nights were well attended, the application deadline was extended to Dec. 2, and the district received over 80 applicants for the first cohort scheduled Jan. 6–June 2. She said vendors will provide UPK services under state funding and that staff in the UPK vendor model are not district employees or covered by district health plans. An RFP process and vendor review committee will recommend contracts for the September 2025 cohort.
Trustees asked for follow-up presentations on club attendance metrics and plans for integrating rosters into the master schedule and student profiles. Administration said the roster rollout could be built over the summer and visible in the master schedule by September.
