Board approves multiple personnel actions and cafeteria contract; trustees debate salary corrections

The Carmel Central School District Board of Education on Feb. 4 approved several personnel resolutions and a successor contract for cafeteria staff.
Personnel actions included approval of instructional and noninstructional staff hires and the retirement notice of bus driver Steven Howell. The board ratified the appointment of a director of people services (three-year probationary appointment effective Feb. 3, 2025) and approved a contractual advanced-degree increment for Timothy Wade, director of human resources and information systems. Administrators said the director of people services position is part of a planned restructuring in response to forthcoming retirements in the PPS department to centralize compliance work and strengthen building-level implementation.
The board also approved $47,111 in salary-discrepancy payments for eight Carmel Teachers Association members after administrators presented a detailed chart. Trustee Curzio voted no, calling the retroactive correction a lengthy responsibility that should in part rest with the individual employee; Trustee Wise abstained. The motion passed by roll call.
On labor matters, the board unanimously approved a memorandum of agreement between the district and the Carmel Central School District Cafeteria Association, which trustees described as a step toward fairer pay for cafeteria staff.
Votes were taken by roll call on multiple personnel items, and several trustees asked that personnel votes be recorded individually as roll-call votes.
