Carmel board adopts policy making kindergarten mandatory

The Carmel Central School District Board of Education on Feb. 4 adopted revised admission policy 7001, making kindergarten mandatory in district schools and deleting the older policy on compulsory attendance ages as redundant.
Trustee Wise noted the adoption protects kindergarten enrollment from future budget-driven elimination, saying the change “makes kindergarten mandatory and by extension protects it from being open for consideration for future budget years.” Another trustee credited a community member, Miss Carpenter, for bringing the idea and said the board’s action fulfilled a promise to the community.
The policy change was approved during the board’s consent/action agenda after a second reading and passed by voice vote. Board members said they would continue outreach and policy review as needed.
The board also adopted other policy updates at the meeting, including technical revisions to probation and tenure policy reflecting state guidance.
