Residents and trustees clash over proposed revisions to Carmel's welcoming policy
Summary
Dozens of residents urged the Carmel Central School District board not to strip explicit diversity, equity and inclusion language from Policy 0012. Dozens of residents and multiple trustees pressed the Carmel Central School District Board of Education on April 8 after the district's policy committee proposed changes to Policy 0012, entitled “Welcoming, affirming and inclusive environment.”

Abigail Lyons, who identified herself as a resident and former district student, said she was "appalled and baffled" by the proposed language that would remove direct references to race, discrimination or marginalization and said the change would harm vulnerable students.
