Parents press Carmel Central board over discipline and staff social-media posts; board says external review is underway

Several members of the Carmel Central community used the board’s public-comment period on Sept. 15 to press the board about budget transparency, student discipline and staff conduct on social media.

Budget and procurement concerns

Longtime commenter Jerry Lee raised detailed questions about budget variances and procurement practices, citing differences between amounts budgeted and actual spending in categories such as substitute salaries and stipends and questioning purchase orders for student pouches and bus software. “Lots of checks, No balances,” Lee said as he reviewed figures where projected and actual spending diverged.

Parent grievance and investigation

A parent described what they called a pattern of unfair targeting of their child, recounting an incident in which their then-10-year-old son was suspended for five days after bringing an art carving knife onto a school bus. The parent said the family had sought an independent investigation and received responses from counsel they considered insufficient and not independent. The parent said emails requesting follow-up had gone unanswered.

Board representatives responded that the board had taken the family’s concerns seriously and had appointed legal counsel to conduct an external investigation; the board said the next step was to meet with the child and that the legal review remains ongoing. Parent Britney Pisco told the board she is "thrilled" with the superintendent appointment but urged the district to act after national coverage of a political assassination and what she said were violent, hateful social-media comments from educators. “This isn't just in poor taste. It's rooted in hatred, and it has no place near our children,” she said, and urged policies that would allow investigation and, where needed, administrative action.
