Planning commission approves special use permit for classic car sales at 8190 Hedgeline Terrace

The Shawnee Planning Commission voted July 21 to recommend approval of a special use permit that would allow GEB Properties LC to operate a small classic automobile sales business at 8190 Hedgeline Terrace.
Mark Silsdorf, city planning staff, told commissioners the applicant plans to operate within the larger, northern building on the property, an 18,000-square-foot structure on a 4.3-acre site platted as Lot 10 of Monticello Industrial Park. Silsdorf said the applicant expects to keep about five to 10 classic cars on site, store vehicles inside the building and conduct the bulk of sales online or through regional auctions; automobile sales in the PI (planned industrial) zoning district require a special use permit. Staff recommended approval of SUP25-02 subject to four conditions and noted the planning commission’s recommendation will be forwarded to the City Council for consideration on Aug. 11.
Applicant representative Heidi McNary, appearing online, confirmed she agreed with staff’s recommendation and provided her contact information for the record. During discussion, Commissioner Aber, who said his office is near the site, said he regularly drives past the location and thought the business would be a good fit. Other commissioners noted similar businesses operate in the area without reported problems.
Commissioner Aber moved to approve SUP25-02 with the four conditions outlined by staff; Commissioner Van Wagen seconded. The commission approved the motion by voice vote; the proposal now moves to the City Council on Aug. 11 for final action.
Other business at the meeting included approval of the consent agenda and a staff recommendation to cancel the commission’s Aug. 4 meeting because there were no items scheduled.
