Trustees approve three-year firefighting athletic-trainer contract to sustain injury-prevention program

The Cascade Charter Township Board approved a three-year contract to continue the fire-department athletic-training program led by Ken Follett of Humanitech, aimed at injury mitigation and rehabilitation for firefighters.
Chief Majors said the athletic-trainer initiative produced measurable improvements after an earlier grant-funded start. "Ken Follett's an expert in the public safety realm of that, and so he's done a really good job with our team," Majors said. He told the board the program helped reduce the department's mod factor and workers'comp costs.
Staff noted they had solicited quotes and that some vendors were unwilling to bid for a one-year term; Majors recommended a three-year agreement to stabilize the service. The township attorney recommended two edits to the draft contract: replace the word "commenced" with "concluded" in paragraph 1 and make the indemnity language mutual in paragraph 11 so both parties share hold-harmless responsibilities. Majors said those edits were included in a hard copy distributed to trustees.
Trustees asked whether the program requires additional equipment (Majors: no; prior grant supplied $62,000 in equipment) and whether the cost would fit the current budget (Majors: "It is"). After discussion, the board approved the contract, directing staff to finalize the attorney's recommended language prior to execution.
