Lawrence County commissioners approve routine permits, personnel moves and honors WWII veteran; move to executive session

The Lawrence County Board of Commissioners met Sept. 30, 2025, approved a series of routine administrative items and recognized a local World War II veteran on his 100th birthday.
The board unanimously approved minutes from its Sept. 23 meeting (with a correction), flood-plain permits submitted by the Soil and Water Conservation District, multiple appropriations and transfers (including a $520,000 transfer from account 0012061000 to 5412157061), and personnel actions affecting emergency medical staff. County Administrator Dylan Bentley had submitted the list of appropriations and transfers. The board also voted to receive and sign secondary manufacturer opioid settlement agreements and approved renewal documents for the voluntary dental plan for 2026.
In a ceremonial item the board approved and read a letter of accommodation recognizing Everett Lee Miller Jr. for his service in the U.S. Navy during World War II and for reaching his 100th birthday. A speaker reading the proclamation said, “Now be it resolved that the board of Lawrence County Commissioners does hereby extend its deepest gratitude and commendation to Everett Lee Miller Junior for his honorable military service.” The proclamation lists Miller’s service and medals, including the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign with one star, the American Campaign Medal and the World War II Victory Medal.
The board also voted to appoint Karen Reed to the Child Abuse and Child Neglect Regional Prevention Council and to hire Alicia Smith as a CPS investigator. An item authorizing the county administrator to send a support letter to Community Action Organization for the Lock 27 project as part of the ACGP program was added and approved with qualifying language that financial support would be considered separately.
Before adjourning to closed session, the board heard a brief update from directors and guests. The meeting concluded with a motion to enter executive session with County Administrator Dylan Bentley and Rick Jansen to discuss legal contracts.
